ABOUT THE PLANT

Description: A bush with woody stems, rifoliate leaves and, when in bloom, dazzling yellow flowers.

Geography: Grown in Africa along the coast and Eastern and Western Cape and high in the Langlauf Mountains.


HISTORY

  • Early 1900's-Dr. Hannes DeLange, a reasearcher at the institute of Kirstenbosh, near Cape Town, began to research and promote its properties.

  • 1997-Aprox 30 tons of Honeybush is processed

  • 1998-The South African Honeybush Association is formed.

  • 2000-Aprox 150 tons of Honeybush is processed

  • 2001-The first large scale African plantation dedicated to the culitivation of Honeybush began operating.


HEALTH BENEFITS

Honeybush is packed with Vitamin C, potassium, calcium and magnesium, isoflavones and coumestans. It contains practically no caffeine (aprox 0.01 percent) and virtually no tannins (associated
with bitter taste in true tea).

Research shows it may alleviate menopausal symptoms in women, prevent cancerous tumors, relieve colic in babies, repair sun damage, aid digestion, even stimulate milk production in nursing mothers.


CHARACTER

A full bodied brew which handles milk well and has slightly spicy undertones

FLAVOR:

Honey-like, apricot flavor, floral, smooth and sweet


BREWING SUGGESTIONS:

Use a paper filter. Pour boiling water over the herb and steep the infusion for several minutes.

Steeping Time: Up to 10 minutes! Will not become bitter with over-steeping.
